GUSTAFSON INSURANCE - Tim GustafsonAvoid accidents, violations and claims: Insurance companies use your driving and claims history to determine statistically how safe you will be and what to charge you for coverage. This background check usually goes back about three years.

Combine your policies: Insurance companies give discounts for insuring both your home/rental policy and auto policy with the same company.

Increase your deductibles: The deductible is the amount you have to pay before the insurance will start paying. The higher your deductible, the less premium you will be charged.

Pay your insurance bill on time: Insurance companies use past billing and some credit information when calculating how much to charge you. This is called your insurance score.

All of these things need to be reviewed and addressed occasionally to ensure you are getting the best price. Give Gustafson Insurance a call to discuss these and other savings available to you.

CANBY BUILDERS SUPPLY - Holly RodwayI got through March without the “green thumb twitch” getting to me. Even the beautiful daffodils didn’t inspire me to get out into the garden. But the great weather we’ve been having is making it hard to hold back. Look out garden, here I come!

I’m hooked on raised bed gardening. Yes, I’m behind on planting, but, with our Canby area spring weather going from sunny to rainy, like it has in the last few weeks, planting in raised beds will get me caught up.

Here’s just some of the benefits of raised bed gardens:

• Better control of nutrients in the soil.

• Less weeds.

• Better water retention in sandy soil and better drainage in clay soil.

• Where the soil warms earlier in the spring, gardens can be started earlier.

• Soil stays warm longer so your growing season can be longer too.

• And, best of all, access to raised beds is just easier on your back.

If you’re a late bloomer like me, raised beds are the way to go.

Canby Builders Supply has everything you need to build a raised cedar planter box kit. We’ve got the potting soil, plant food, tools, garden gloves and even seeds and more to get you “growing” fast.

CANBY TELCOM - Merry ShepardIn recent weeks, there have been reports of telephone scammers calling around the area claiming to be from the local telephone company and demanding money immediately or services would be disconnected.

Because legitimate organizations will on occasion contact their members by telephone, it can be difficult to tell a scammer from a member services representative. Similarly, fake emails or pop-ups on a website can look eerily similar to the real thing (see example).

Here’s what you should know to protect yourself from a telephone, Internet or email scam:

Prepaid debit cards are a red flag. If a caller demands instant payment using a prepaid debit card such as Green Dot MoneyPak, Vanilla or Reloadit prepaid cards, hang up immediately. A legitimate organization like Canby Telcom would never request this information from you.CANBY TELCOM - Don't be fooled! This message was sent by scammers, not Canby Telcom.

Don’t cave in to pressure to pay immediately. Members who are behind on their payments receive written notices of a possible disconnection and a pre-recorded reminder call with instructions on how to prevent a service interruption.

Never give out your personal information. Don’t share your bank account numbers, credit card number, Social Security number or date of birth, even if the person seems legitimate.

Be informed. If you suspect you’ve been a target of a scam, call the company directly to verify whether you owe money. Report any incidents immediately by calling Canby Telcom at (503) 266-8111.

CANBY CLINIC - Robert Neilson, NDSpring is here! If you enjoy the warmer temperature, sunshine and flowers in bloom, this may be good news for you. However, for many people, the fresh pollens and grasses can bring a disaster of allergy symptoms, including running nose, itchy eyes, skin rashes and more. Allergy symptoms occur when the immune system is overreacting to certain stimuli, like pollen, that normally it should not be reacting to. The key to treatment is calming down the overactive immune system, so the body stops producing these symptoms.

Calming down the immune system can be challenging, and multiple therapies are often needed to treat allergies. Reducing the allergen load by improving indoor air quality can make a huge difference. Some easy techniques include: Using an air filter in the bedroom, washing bedding every two to three days in hot water and keeping pets outdoors.

Seventy percent of our immune system is in our intestines, and healthy digestion is key to a healthy immune system. Cleaning up the diet is one of the most effective treatments for seasonal allergies. Many people’s allergy symptoms dramatically improve just by following a Mediterranean diet and avoiding food sensitivities. One of the best ways to additionally regulate your immune system is taking probiotics regularly.

The above treatments are just a start, and the physicians at Canby Clinic are ready with plenty of additional treatments including herbs, acupuncture and supplements to address your seasonal allergies. For an individualized assessment, call us at (503) 266-7443 or visit us at 452 NW 1st Avenue in Canby.

CANBY FORD - Buy American! Support Canby Ford. After a two-year hiatus, the Ford F-150 Raptor is back—with enhanced capabilities and all-new technology that make the 2017 Raptor even more of an off-road powerhouse than ever before.

It only takes a minute inside the cab to understand why the F-150 Raptor is considered to have the “DNA of a Baja race truck” by weekend racers and professional drivers alike.

The Raptor is powered by Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine technology, which produces more thrust than the older 6.2-liter V8 engine. A 10-speed transmission ensures optimal efficiency when shifting.

A new transfer case manages power distribution between the front and back wheels, ensuring force on demand for the Raptor’s four-wheel drive. The 2017 Raptor also comes with a brand new Terrain Management System, allowing the driver to optimize engine output depending on driving conditions.

Military-strength steel and high-grade aluminium-alloy body construction allowed Ford’s engineers to shave an amazing 500 pounds off previous iterations of the Raptor. In fact, the leaner frame and increased engine capacity give the Raptor its best weight-to-power ratio ever.

The 2017 Raptor is available as both a SuperCrew and SuperCab truck. The four-door SuperCrew comes with an expanded 145-inch wheelbase, providing more legroom for passengers and storage space for gear.

The 2017 Raptor will be built at the Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan. Sales to the public are slated to begin this fall.

NEAL FAMILY DENTAL - Dr. Alan NealWelcome back to my three-part series on Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a disease which can decrease a person’s lifespan by eight to 10 years. You can read the first part online.

Today, I’m going to focus on the diagnosis of sleep apnea. In my office, we rely on the STOP-BANG test, an evaluation tool used by sleep specialists worldwide. Here are few questions you can ask yourself, taken from the test:

  • Am I sleepy all the time?
  • Do I have a dry, raspy voice in the morning?
  • Do I have difficulty staying awake or experience excessive sleepiness four plus days per week? Do I experience sore neck muscles upon waking?
  • NEAL FAMILY DENTAL/LAUREN CARLIN - While we sleep, gravity and muscle relaxation allows the tongue and surrounding soft tissue to fall back into the throat area, collapsing the airway and obstructing the air flow.

  • Morning headaches?
  • If you answered “yes” to two or more of the above questions, I highly recommend scheduling an at home sleep study with a board-certified sleep doctor. At Neal Family Dental, we use a two-night ARES Home Sleep Test. The ARES test uses a headstrap device and nasal tube to monitor your sleep for two consecutive nights.

The ARES measures everything from your head position, when you snore, the duration of those snores, if and when you obstruct and the oxygen content in your blood. The test results are generally definitive.

Stay tuned for the third and final installment, where I’ll discuss the treatment of sleep apnea.NEAL FAMILY DENTAL/LAUREN CARLIN - Worn during sleep, continuous open airway therapy consists of devices that fit over the upper and lower teeth. COAT devices treat OSA by moving the lower jaw slightly forward. This forward movement helps keep the airway open and allows you to sleep more soundly. These devices are comfortable and simple to use.

Brought to you by Ron and Barb Raines - Club Fit - FITNESS INSIDER -

CLUB FIT - FROM LEFT: Ron and Barb RainesIt’s the same in fitness as it is in business: What gets measured, gets managed. And increasingly, what gets managed—gets done.

That’s why I love my Fitbit. If you haven’t heard, the Fitbit is one version of what today’s exercise gurus call “wearable fitness monitors.” It’s not that different from a pedometer in principle, but modern electronic trackers monitor not only your steps, but your caloric intake and outtake, as well as your sleeping habits.

All of this data is then presented in easy to understand charts and graphs, and the information can usually be synced between devices, including your smartphone or computer. Besides the Fitbit, Garmin, Nike and Apple all sell popular fitness trackers that can be worn on a stylish wrist strap. If you don’t want to wear a separate piece of technology, you can use applications like MyFitnessPal that live on your phone.

But why use one of these tools? It’s just basic math. You need to expend 3,500 calories to lose a pound of body fat—and the best way to know you’ve burned enough is to track what you eat and burn together. There’s also the motivational factor of competing against yourself. This has become more important as I’ve grown older.

At Club Fit, we have memberships for any budget and lifestyle. Our personal trainers can develop a fitness plan that’s unique to you. Join today and receive two personal trainer appointments for just $75!

Dr. Alan NealYour snoring won’t kill you immediately. But if you suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), you may be slowly choking during sleep each night.

Sleep apnea is a life-threatening disease affecting approximately 18 million Americans. The chronic lack of sleep caused by OSA can shorten a patient’s lifespan by eight to 10 years.

I’ve had several close acquaintances “die in their sleep.” It took me five years to convince my mother to take a sleep study—her snoring and obstructions could be heard in the next room. My mother had sleep apnea. After she went to bed each night, her tongue was relaxing and falling into the back of her throat, choking her during sleep as often as 60 times a night.

Here’s how the Academy of General Dentistry describes the effects of sleep apnea. “With each episode, the sleeper’s brain briefly wakes up [triggering the body’s fight-or-flight reflex with a jolt of adrenaline] in order to resume breathing, resulting in extremely fragmented and poor-quality sleep.”

Approximately one in every seven adult experiences sleep apnea, though most are undiagnosed or untreated. Of course, most people don’t fall asleep at the dentist office. But when I do have a patient snoring (and sometimes obstructing) during a cleaning or other procedure, I may ask if they have ever had an evaluation for OSA.

Stay tuned for my next article, when I’ll discuss the diagnosis and different treatment options for sleep apnea.

Brought to you by Dr. Robert Neilson - Canby Clinic - PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER INSIDER -

Dr. Robert NeilsonSleep! Sleep, a foundation to health, is the critical time for the mind, body, and spirit to restore and rejuvenate. Healthy sleep allows the body to have the reserves and energy for a more productive, more active, and often more enjoyable daily life.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, sleep and relaxation are yin states, while activity and wakefulness are yang.

When yin and yang are balanced, health is maintained, and disease can be thwarted. However, disease develops when there is a lack of rest when combined with over-activity, stress, and other challenges from daily life. Studies show that lack of sleep increases inflammation, which in turn, increases the risk for chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and chronic pain. Thus, this spring, embrace your yin side to promote rest, balance, and health.

When addressing sleep problems, Canby Clinic physicians begin treatment with lifestyle changes, using nutrients and herbs, as well as using acupuncture. The physicians also utilize pharmaceutical medications when appropriate. If you have trouble sleeping, try avoiding using your iPhone, tablet, or computer before bed. The blue light emitted from those devices impairs your sleep hormone, melatonin. Also, regular aerobic exercise is shown to improve sleep quality and decrease daytime sleepiness.

Canby Clinic physicians would be honored to help you on your path to healthy sleep and balance. For an individualized assessment, call us at 503.266.7443 or visit us at 452 NW 1st Avenue in Canby. Check the website at canbyclinic.com.
