Boat ride is wish come true for OC senior

When Sher Johnson found out that Betty Pointer, 88, had never been on a boat and would love to go on a boat ride, she decided to make Pointer’s wish come true.

“During exercise class we use swim noodles and pretend we are rowing, canoeing and kayaking with our ‘paddles.’ When I asked everyone what their favorite type of boat is, Betty told me she had never been on a boat before,” Johnson said.

During the month of April organizers at Gilman Park started fundraising for making the residents’ wishes come true by hanging three umbrellas upside down in the lobby for folks to throw spare change into.

With this money they granted two other wishes, in addition to Pointer’s, including a meal at a steakhouse and a trip to the beach with lunch at Mo’s in Cannon Beach.

To make Pointer’s wish come true, Johnson did some research and came across Terry Logerwell and his business River City Guide Service, based at McCuddy’s Big Oak Marina near Scappoose.

“Terry lives there on the river in a houseboat and has for 18 years. His job is mainly as a fishing guide, but he also does scenic river tours. He was so easy-going and informative, pointing things out along the way,” Johnson said.

On Friday, June 20, Johnson went along on the trip, accompanying Pointer and her daughter, Jean Prentis.

“We rode for two-and-a-half hours up and down the Multnomah Channel between Sauvie Island and Highway 30, and it was a gorgeous, warm, sunny afternoon,” Johnson said.

Logerwell said the main part of his business is fishing, but he has taken people out on sightseeing tours, especially for wildlife viewing.
