My View: Michele Conditt

Help your town, join Estacada City Council

Michele CondittThe city needs you!

Did you know that I have served as your city councilor for nearly 12 years? It is hard to believe that much time has passed. As I near the end of my third term I wanted to take a minute and reflect.

It has been one of the most challenging and yet rewarding things I have ever been part of. I feel honored that I have been allowed to serve the people of Estacada for more than a decade.

But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. I have decided against seeking re-election, and as of Aug. 1, it’s time for new council candidates to come forward.

I had two grade-school kids when I started. I also volunteered for the school in various ways. I worked on both the school bond and library campaigns. And I worked a full time job. So don’t tell me you are too busy.

There are more than 2,500 people in the city limits and I know there is someone out there right now who is thinking I could make a difference, I could lead with balance and find ways to collaborate and work with the other councilors to make the city of Estacada the best small town in Clackamas County.

What I like to tell people about being on the City Council is this: You don’t have to know everything about civics, government or even politics.

What you need is a level head, patience, the ability to see the big picture, consideration and respect, integrity and creativity. And a good sense of humor doesn’t hurt.

You need to be able to set your own agenda aside and look at the city as a whole, and think about where it is headed and how you can help set policy to get it there.

So, if you are reading this and think you can bring value and experience to the City Council and want to throw your hat in the ring, do it!

The city staff will walk you through the process of filing out the paperwork and collecting signatures to get on the ballot. You only need 20 signatures. So step on up and serve your city. We need you.
