Carla Piluso to run for state legislature

Greg Matthews says he won't run

Rep. Greg Matthews, D-Gresham, announced March 7 that he will not seek re-election and has endorsed former Gresham police chief Carla Piluso, who is running for the seat in the 50th District.

Matthews has served in the state legislature since 2008. Last year he was selected to serve as Interim Fire Chief for the city of Gresham, and says he plans to devote his time to that endeavor instead of seeking re-election.

“It has been an honor to serve in this body for the past six years,” Matthews said. “I’m looking forward to devoting my full energy to the Gresham Fire Department and to my family, and I'm hrilled that we have a strong leader stepping up to serve our community in Salem. I’ll be throwing my full support behind Carla Piluso’s candidacy for House District 50.”

Piluso is best known for her 30 years with the Gresham Police Department, during which she became the city’s first female police chief.

"I’m running to be our next state representative to ensure that our community is a safe place to live, to create greater economic opportunities, and to fight for middle class families,” Piluso said. “You have my full commitment that I will give Gresham a strong voice in our state Capitol.”

Piluso retired from the force in January 2009 and currently sits on the Gresham Barlow School District Board and serves on a number of community and non-profit boards.

Oregon's Democratic and Republican parties take place May 20.
