Nick Jones

(age 69)

Jones starred at Marshall High before playing for the Oregon Ducks. The 6-2, 190-pound guard suited up for his first NBA season with the San Diego Rockets in 1967. He also played for the San Francisco/Golden State Warriors, along with the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association.

Shaler Halimon

March 30, 1945

(age 69)

Halimon, a 6-5 guard born on this day in Tampa, Fla., came out of Utah State to play three NBA seasons, including 1970-71 with the inaugural Trail Blazers. For Portland, he averaged 8.9 points per game.

LaRue Martin

March 30, 1950

(age 64)

Martin was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1972 NBA draft, and played four seasons, all with Portland. Listed at 6-11 and 208 pounds, he finished with career averages of 5.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, shooting 41.6 percent from the field.

Eric Gunderson

March 29, 1966

(age 48)

The former Portland State Vikings right-hander, born in Portland, made his MLB debut on April 11, 1990. Gunderson, 6-0 and 195 pounds, appeared in 254 career games with six teams, going 8-11 with two saves and a 4.95 ERA.

Steve Smith

March 31, 1969

(age 45)

The longtime NBA guard spent two of his 14 seasons with Portland (1999-2001). Smith, born in Highland Park, Mich., averaged 14.3 points per game in his pro career.

Angie Kerr

March 29, 1985

(age 29)

The Portland Thorns' midfielder was born on this day in San Diego, Calif. She played on the University of Portland's 2005 NCAA championship team.

• Portland State College has hired a believer in the "throwing type of game" — giving 34-year-old Don Read the head football coaching job.
