Mentor Graphics makes key acquisition for leap into auto field

Mentor Graphics Corporation recently announced its acquisition of XS Embedded GmbH, a leader in the creation of computerized automotive system architectures and hardware platforms.

XSe, as the company is known, has more than a decade of direct experience in the automotive electronics design industry and brings a unique approach to system design and verification to the Wilsonville-based parent company. Mentor said in a press release it is now “well positioned to address the cross-functional collaboration needs required to address the trends towards integration of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Driver Information and Infotainment domains.”

It’s easy to overlook just how far modern automotive systems push the technology envelope. In-vehicle systems combine high-quality graphics, domain-specific audio, multi-media, mobile device integration and connectivity.

Designing the hardware and software to run these systems requires millions of lines of code per vehicle to ensure reliability. The tremendous cost pressures involved in the industry make this work even more critical.

“XS Embedded is recognized for its deep automotive domain expertise and unique IP, including the AXSB automotive-ready reference board and software modules,” Glenn Perry, Mentor Graphics Embedded System Division general manager said in the press release.

XSe has pioneered a new approach that provides its customers with unique automotive-ready reference platforms. This helps vendors improve architectural optimization, the partitioning of software and ultimately reduces design costs.

The company partners with key semiconductor vendors such as Texas Instruments and others to supply automotive-grade hardware.

“By combining Mentor’s Android, hypervisor, security, AUTOSAR and Nucleus solutions with XSe automotive-ready solutions, we are able to address the entire vehicle software infrastructure requirements of the most sophisticated vehicles in design today,” said Rainer Oder, managing director of XS Embedded.

Oder added he is proud his company is the first to market an end-to-end solution for building unified vehicle software infrastructure.

The Mentor Graphics Embedded Systems Division works on embedded computer systems for a variety of applications, including automotive, industrial, medical, consumer electronics, networking, military and aerospace. For more information, visit mentor.com/embedded.
